Introduction #3: POLIBA

The Environmental Technologies research group of the Polytechnic University of Bari (POLIBA) is proud to be introduced as the second European University participating in the SWAP project.

General information

Polytechnic University of Bari (POLIBA) - located in Apulia, Italy - is a public institution whose primary purpose is the organization and promotion of higher education and research, as well as the processing and transfer of scientific and technological knowledge primarily in the field of engineering. POLIBA has as its fundamental principles the pursuit of excellence and innovation in the context of higher education and international research, as well as the cultural and civil education person growth.

The research group in Environmental Technologies (ET) as part of POLIBA is involved in SWAP. Since over 20 years ET group has been working in the field of solid waste management and remediation of contaminated sites. ET is involved in national and international projects and provides services, through numerous research contracts, to leading private and public companies.

Team POLIBA

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sabino De Gisi is a senior researcher and holds a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Salerno, Italy. He has consolidated experience in the development and application of new materials and technologies for environmental protection with particular reference to the fields of solid waste and remediation of contaminated sites. His main research topics are material and energy recovery via thermal processes applied to solid waste, biological processes for the treatment of organic fraction of municipal solid waste, remediation of contaminated sites with particular emphasis on the search for new materials for stabilization/solidification, and development of holistic multidisciplinary approaches as decision support tools for solving complex environmental problems.
Sabino is the Scientific Coordinator of POLIBA within the SWAP project and leader of WP5.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michele Notarnicola is a full professor and head of Environmental Technologies Laboratory at POLIBA. He teaches the only course on solid waste and contaminated site remediation at an engineering school in the Apulia Region, namely Waste Management and Contaminated Site Remediation and Industrial Waste Management. He carries out his scientific activity in Materials Science and Technology, developing lines of research in the field of technologies for environmental protection with particular reference to solid waste management, contaminated site remediation, wastewater treatment and air emission control. He was scientific coordinator of several international/national research projects that are eligible for funding on the basis of competitive calls.
Michele offers his management and technical expertise to support his young researchers involved in SWAP.

Dr.-Ing. Claudia Labianca is a research associate at POLIBA dealing with waste management and remediation of contaminated sites. In 2020, she completed her PhD at POLIBA in the field of risk and environmental, territorial and building development with a focus on remediation technologies. Her research is focused on the study of environmental engineering activities, remediation technologies for contaminated sites, waste and wastewater management and treatment, engaging recovery and recycling projects. Her work experience has given Claudia strong management skills and the ability to interact with people from all over the world.
Claudia will bring her energy and innate organizational skills to SWAP.

Giovanni Gadaleta is a research fellow at Politecnico di Bari (Italy), working on the treatment of municipal and industrial waste. His main expertise fields are the biological treatment of biodegradable waste (composting and anaerobic digestion) and the recycling of plastic waste, especially biodegradable one. He has completed his Ph.D. in “Risk and Environmental, Territorial and Building Development” at Politecnico di Bari (Italy), discussing a thesis entitled “Treatment technologies of cellulose-based bio-plastic waste: an experimental and theoretical investigation”. On July 2019, he have obtained the master in Environmental and Territorial Engineering at Politecnico di Bari. Currently, he is working under the project Erasmus SWAP - Sustainable solid WAste management and Policies. He has also experience as reviewer of scientific journals and co-mentor for bachelor students.

SWAP Activities run by POLIBA

The Environmental Technologies research group is the leader of Work Package 5 with the responsibility for the quality control plan, continous monitoring and regular meetings on quality assurance. Besides numerous other activities, the POLIBA team is also involved in

  • Work Package 1 - as task leader in identifying educational offers and best practices in Programme Countries
  • Work Package 2 and 3 - by holding workshops on landfilling, landfill siting, contaminated sites and emissions control, and also by developing teaching material
  • Work Package 6 - as task leader on the implementation of sustainability and exploitation plan
